Core Programs
Boys & Girls Club of Carbon County offers
more than sports and recreation. Our programs build character,
encourage education and career exploration, inspire healthy
living and cultivate appreciation for the arts. Based on
physical, emotional, cultural and social needs and interests of
girls and boys, and recognizing developmental principles, the
Club offers program activities in the five core areas described
below:
| Character & Leadership: Empowers
youth to support their Club and community, sustain
relationships, develop a positive self-image, and
respect other cultures. |
Example: Torch Club This is a leadership
group for members ages 10-13. Members do service
projects for the Club and Community and organize
events at the Club. |
| Education & Career: Enables youth
to become proficient in basic educational
disciplines, to embrace technology and to learn and
explore career options. |
Example: Power Hour Power Hour is a time when
members can do homework and read, as well as receive
help from staff and volunteers. Members earn Power
Hour points, which are redeemable each month for
cool prizes like sweatshirts and DVDs. |
| Health & Life Skills: Encourages
youth to engage in positive behaviors, nurture their
well-being, set goals and live healthy and positive
lives. |
Example: SMART Moves and SMART Girls SMART
Moves stands for Skills, Mastery and Resistance
Training. This program is a nationally renowned
drug, alcohol, tobacco, and premature sex prevention
program. SMART Girls is similar to SMART Moves and
focuses on images of women in the media, dating
violence and relationship issues. |
| The Arts: Cultivates creativity
and cultural awareness through knowledge and
appreciation of various visual, performing and
creative art forms. |
Example: MAPS MAPS stands for Media Arts in
the Public Schools. Its goal is to create quality
jobs for Montana teens. Currently there are five
Boys & Girls Clubs in Montana participating in this
program: Missoula, Wolf Point, Kalispell, Bozeman
and Red Lodge. |
| Sports, Fitness & Recreation:
Develops fitness, positive use of leisure time,
stress management, social skills, teamwork and
appreciation for the environment. |
